So … I did a thing. On April 1st of this year, I decided to make some big changes.

I was tired of looking how I was looking (fat). I was tired of feeling how I was feeling (no energy). I didn’t like the way I looked and felt, and it was negatively impacting everything.

I stepped on the scale for the first time in over a year and wanted to cry. I was on the wrong side of 200. I weighed in at a whopping 237 pounds. This was 57 pounds higher than when I was nine months pregnant and 100 pounds higher than my high school weight. I was fat. I was inactive. I had no energy. Nothing in my closet fit. You get the picture.

That day (April 1) was ground zero for me. That day I decided I wasn’t going to live and feel like that anymore. That day I said no more! That day I decided that I was ready to make the changes necessary to straighten my life out and start living a healthier lifestyle. That day I set some goals and I also set a deadline of one year to accomplish them. That day I made a commitment and decided to make myself a priority. Yes, April 1 was a monumental day for me.

Today, I’m happy to say I’m down 50 pounds.

And I feel really good again! I am physically lighter and a lot stronger. I eat healthy every day and I have a lot of energy. And I’m just getting started.

People often notice changes and want to know what I am doing. Most are looking for the quick fix or the magic pill without putting in the work, which we all know is like the unicorn — it doesn’t really exist.

So what did I do? I went to the computer and searched for the closest gyms to where I lived. I called, emailed and had discussions with each of them. Time 2 Change Fitness for Women was one of the options I found. I hadn’t heard of it before, but I noticed it was a women-only group training studio and its small, boutique environment had great appeal for me. There was no other place like it and that really spoke to me.

I emailed Time 2 Change Fitness, told them a little about my story and was pleasantly surprised when I quickly received a return email from Teresa Yockey, the owner. Teresa listened to what I was saying, explained what Time 2 Change had to offer, and she encouraged me to schedule a free session to experience things for myself. She explained that the hardest part would be walking in the door for the first time, but the rest would be easier from there. And she was exactly right. I made my appointment, walked in, met the trainer and the ladies in the class and never looked back.

Has it been easy? For the most part, yes.

Right from the start, it was easy to connect with T2C, understand the group workout format and join the studio. It’s a small, very clean space to work out, and it’s been easy to schedule my weekly sessions. Justin Cantwell is the trainer and nutrition program advisor for the early morning weekday sessions that I attend. He is a wealth of knowledge, patient and is a committed partner in my success.

The ladies that I work out with are wonderful, too. Every single one of them. There is no competitiveness at T2C. Everybody works toward their own goals at their own fitness level. Justin tailors a program and plan for exactly what you are trying to accomplish and changes it up regularly so you are never bored. The hard part is remembering that it’s a marathon, not a sprint — and that it takes time to accomplish the goals and patience is your new best friend.

I’ve always read that results come from 80% nutrition (in the kitchen) and 20% from the activities (in the gym and beyond). I firmly believe this and it has been my focus and experience to date. I carefully prepare food and log everything I eat and drink in a planner and faithfully go to the gym 3–4 times every week. If I need to miss a workout for any reason, like work or travel, I replace not erase. Meaning, I reschedule (not cancel). I love my workouts, it is my “me time,” and I never want to miss even one session.

And thanks, too, for building a wonderful environment where people like myself can come and feel comfortable and reach their goals. I so enjoy T2C and it’s a perfect fit for me.

Also … a huge thank you to Justin for having the patience of a saint. I’m not sure how he handles all of the estrogen in the gym, but he does so with grace and always a big smile. Justin, you’ve been a true game-changer for me. You helped establish my eating plan so I could accomplish some lofty weight-loss goals. Further, you put me on a plan in the gym that continually challenges me and is producing real results. You mix it up and regularly challenge me, and your encouragement and support keep me focused and on track. You practice what you preach and are a strong mentor for every one of us.
